**Chains That Set the Gospel Free**

You who read this, when I sat down to tell the Philippians how I was faring, I did not begin with my chains but with what my chains had done. "I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel" (Philippians 1:12). I am a prisoner in Rome, guarded day and night — and by that very guard the whole praetorium has come to know that I am here for Christ (Philippians 1:13). The thing that looked like the silencing of the good news became its herald. God does not merely rescue us from hard things; he presses the hard things themselves into the service of his purpose. Do not measure his work by your comfort.

And my bonds emboldened others. "Most of the brothers, having become confident in the Lord by my imprisonment, are much more bold to speak the word without fear" (Philippians 1:14). Yet not all of them from clean hearts — some preached Christ "from envy and rivalry," even hoping to add to my affliction (Philippians 1:15-17). Hear then what I decided, and let it search you: "Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed, and in that I rejoice" (Philippians 1:18). I would not let their poor motives rob me of my joy, because my joy was never in being honored — it was in Christ being named. When you can rejoice that the truth goes forward even by hands that meant you ill, you have been set very free.

Then I opened to them the deepest thing, and I open it to you now. I did not yet know whether I would live or die, and I could say honestly, "For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain" (Philippians 1:21). Weigh both halves. To die is not loss but gain, for it means "to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better" (Philippians 1:23) — this is the hope death cannot touch. But to live is not mere waiting; to live is Christ himself, work and fruit and love poured out for you. So I was "hard pressed between the two" (Philippians 1:23), pulled by longing toward my Lord and held here by need — "to remain in the flesh is more necessary on your account" (Philippians 1:24).

See what a man looks like who has died already to himself: he cannot lose. If he lives, Christ. If he dies, Christ, and better. Do you stand where I stood — is your life so bound to Christ that death has become gain and life has become fruit? If it is not so yet, come to him who alone makes it so. And if it is, then live today as I resolved to live: not clutching your own comfort, but poured out for the joy and faith of others, content in whatever state you are, because the One you are living for is enough.
