Worthy of the Gospel, Together

When I wrote to you, "Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ" (Philippians 1:27), I chose that word for a reason. It is the word for a citizen — for one who lives as a member of a great commonwealth and carries its honor in the streets. You who are in Christ belong to a kingdom that does not fail, and I am asking you to walk through your ordinary days — your work, your home, your griefs — as one who bears that name well. Not to earn the gospel; you cannot. But to adorn it, so that whether I am present or absent, what I hear of you matches what Christ has done for you.

And notice what I longed to hear: "that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel" (Philippians 1:27). Standing — for the ground is contested. Side by side — for you were never meant to stand alone. I have seen too many believers fall not because the enemy was strong but because they were solitary, and no shoulder was next to theirs. Stand together, as one body pressing toward one thing.

Then I said, "and not frightened in anything by your opponents" (Philippians 1:28). I know fear. I write this in chains. Yet I tell you your steadiness under pressure preaches: it is "a clear sign to them of their destruction, but of your salvation, and that from God" (Philippians 1:28). When the world cannot make you flinch, it is looking at the hand of God holding you, and it knows, though it will not say so.

But hear the hardest and tenderest word, the one that changes everything. "For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake" (Philippians 1:29). Granted — given as a gift, as grace. Your faith is a gift; so, strangely, is your suffering for him. This is not God turning his face away. It is God drawing you into the same struggle you saw in me and hear of still (Philippians 1:30) — into fellowship with a Savior who suffered first and for you. So when hardship comes for the sake of his name, do not read it as abandonment. Read it as belonging. You have been counted worthy to share what he shares. Stand firm, stand together, and do not be afraid.
