No Other Gospel

When I wrote to the churches of Galatia, I did not open, as I often do, with thanksgiving. I could not. Something was at stake too grave for pleasantries, and I want you to feel its weight from the first line: "Paul, an apostle—not from men nor through man, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead" (Galatians 1:1). I say it that plainly because my message was not mine to soften. It came from the risen Christ himself. And already, in that first breath, is the whole of it — a crucified Savior whom God raised. Keep your eye there.

For notice what I say Christ has done: he "gave himself for our sins to deliver us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father" (Galatians 1:4). He gave himself. Not a demand, but a gift; not a ladder for you to climb, but a rescue reaching down. And it was no accident or afterthought — it was the will of the Father, and so I break into praise: "to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen" (Galatians 1:5). That is the gospel I preached to them, and it is finished.

Which is why what came next astonished me. "I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel" (Galatians 1:6). See it carefully — to abandon grace is to abandon a person, the One who called you. And there is no other gospel to turn to; there are only men who "trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ" (Galatians 1:7). Add anything to the finished work of Christ — your law-keeping, your record, your worthiness — and you have not improved the gospel. You have destroyed it.

So I said the hardest thing I have ever written, and I meant it twice: "even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed" (Galatians 1:8). Not even I, not even a shining angel, may lay another foundation. And do you hear why I could speak so? "If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ" (Galatians 1:10). A man-pleaser trims his message to be liked. A servant of Christ cannot.

Beloved, hear me today. The temptation to add to grace is not ancient history; it lives in every heart that wakes wondering whether it has done enough to be loved by God. You have not done enough — and Christ has. Rest there. Refuse every voice, even your own, that whispers grace is not sufficient. He gave himself. Let that be glory forever, and let it be peace to you this day.
