For Freedom He Set You Free

"For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery" (Galatians 5:1). Everything I have argued in this letter comes to rest here. I have shown you that no man is justified by the works of the law, that the promise came by faith, that you are sons and not slaves. Now hear the whole matter as one word: you are free. Not free to become slaves again — free to stand. So plant your feet. The old yoke is off your neck; do not go crawling back beneath it as though the Son of God died for nothing.

I speak plainly, for the danger is deadly: "if you accept circumcision, Christ will be of no advantage to you" (Galatians 5:2). Understand what is at stake. To add the law to Christ as your ground of acceptance is not to have Christ and the law — it is to lose Christ altogether. "You are severed from Christ, you who would be justified by the law; you have fallen away from grace" (Galatians 5:4). It is one or the other. Either he is your whole righteousness or he is no part of it. There is no shelf on which to keep him beside your own achievement.

Then where do we stand instead? "Through the Spirit, by faith, we ourselves eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness" (Galatians 5:5). We are not busy earning what we already await as a gift. And what counts in Christ Jesus? Not the mark on the flesh, not its absence, but "faith working through love" (Galatians 5:6). Hear that carefully, you who fear that grace makes men careless: the faith that saves is never idle. It works. And the engine of its working is love.

For you were running well (Galatians 5:7) — and a little leaven, one lie about the gospel, sours the whole lump. Guard the truth. But do not mistake freedom for license. "You were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another" (Galatians 5:13). This is the freedom Christ bought — not to serve yourself at last, but to be loosed from yourself enough to serve your neighbor. "The whole law is fulfilled in one word: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself'" (Galatians 5:14).

So today, wherever you are: stop trying to purchase what Christ has already given, and rest. Then rise from that rest and spend yourself on the person beside you. And take the warning at the end as tenderly as it is sharp — "if you bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not consumed by one another" (Galatians 5:15). Freedom turned into a weapon against a brother eats the one who wields it. Let it be turned, instead, into a towel and a basin. That is what the cross set you free to do.
